What is Retro Bowl?
Retro Bowl is an American football game with two halves. In the front office you are the general manager: you draft rookies, sign and cut players under a salary cap, hire an offensive and a defensive coordinator, upgrade the training, rehab and stadium facilities, and answer the press after every game. On the field you run the offense. Every pass is thrown by you, every run is steered by you, every fourth down is your call, and the defense plays itself while the score tells you how well you built it.
New Star Games, the studio of Simon Read, released it for phones in January 2020, and the browser version followed in 2021. It looks like a game from 1989 and plays like one written by someone who understood exactly which parts of football are fun. A season takes an evening, a dynasty takes a month, and the moment your rebuilt franchise lifts the Retro Bowl feels earned every time.
How to play Retro Bowl
- Press Play above. The game loads in this page and asks you to pick a team. The weakest teams have the most cap room and the best draft pick.
- Go through the front office first: fill the roster, choose coordinators and spend what you can on the training facility.
- In a game, when your quarterback has the ball, drag back to aim and release to throw. The arrow shows direction and the drag length sets power.
- Tap or click to run with the ball, flick sideways to juke. Drag upward to kick.
- Keep fan support up by winning, keep your stars happy in the press conferences, and take the team to the Retro Bowl at the end of the season.
The one thing new players miss: before you throw, you can drag a receiver to change his route. A curl turned into a go route against a soft defense is the easiest big play in the game.

The front office
- Roster and salary cap. Every player has a contract, a rating and a morale. The cap is tight, so a roster of stars is not possible; a roster of the right stars is.
- The draft. Rookies come with hidden potential. A late pick can become a franchise quarterback; a first-round bust can sink a season.
- Free agency. Veterans fill gaps quickly and cost cap space. They are the fastest way to fix a weak position before the season.
- Coordinators. The offensive and defensive coordinators level up the players on their side of the ball. The defensive coordinator is the only control you have over the defense.
- Facilities. Training raises player growth, rehab shortens injuries, the stadium raises fan support. Train first.
- Fan support. The owner’s patience and your budget in one number. Win and it rises; lose or trade a fan favourite and it drops.
- Press conferences. Each answer shifts morale for a player or the team. Praise costs nothing; blame costs a lot.
Tips for a winning franchise
- Draft a quarterback early. Accuracy and arm strength on the passer make every receiver on the roster better.
- Build the offensive line. Sacks and pressures come from a weak line, and no amount of throwing skill fixes a collapsing pocket.
- Keep a kicker with power. Field goals from 50 are the difference in close games and the simulated defense will give you close games.
- Punt on fourth and long in your own half. A turnover on downs at your 40 is a touchdown the other way more often than not.
- Watch morale. A star with low morale demands a trade; a team with low morale plays below its ratings.
- Use the two-minute drill. Sideline throws stop the clock. A drive that starts with 1:30 left is enough for a field goal if every catch goes out of bounds.
- Extend contracts a year early. A player entering the last year of his deal asks for far more than one with two years left.
Playing Retro Bowl on a phone, tablet or Chromebook
Retro Bowl was designed for touch, and the browser build keeps the same gestures: drag to throw, tap to run, swipe to kick. On a phone, turn it sideways so the field fills the screen and use the fullscreen button under the player. On a Chromebook or a laptop the mouse does everything; there are no keyboard controls to learn. The game is light, loads in a few seconds and keeps your career in the browser’s storage, so it works offline once it is open.
Why Retro Bowl is still worth playing
Most football games try to simulate everything and end up simulating nothing well. Retro Bowl chose the two parts people actually enjoy, building a team and throwing the ball, and did both properly. The management side has real consequences, the passing is a genuine skill, and a season is short enough that a bad one is a lesson rather than a chore. It is one of the few sports games that is as good on the tenth season as on the first.
Frequently asked questions about Retro Bowl
Is Retro Bowl free to play here?
Yes. The full HTML5 game runs directly in this page. There is nothing to download or install and no account to create. Press Play and the welcome screen loads.
What is Retro Bowl?
Retro Bowl is an American football game by New Star Games, released in January 2020 for phones and in 2021 for the browser. It mixes a general-manager game, where you draft, sign, train and cut players under a salary cap, with an on-field game where you throw every pass and steer every run yourself. The defense is simulated. The look is 8-bit and the season ends, if you are good enough, at the Retro Bowl.
Does my progress save?
Yes. The game stores your career in this browser on this device. Play from the same browser to continue. Clearing site data, a private window or a different device starts a new career.
How do I throw a pass?
When your quarterback has the ball, click or touch and drag backwards. An arrow shows the direction and the length of the drag sets the power. Release to throw. You can drag a receiver before the throw to change his route.
How do I run with the ball?
Tap or click while holding the ball to take off with the quarterback, or after a handoff steer the ball carrier with your finger or the mouse. Flick sideways to juke past a tackler.
Can I play defense?
No. Retro Bowl only lets you play offense and special teams. How the defense performs depends on the players you sign and the defensive coordinator you hire.
Why is my team so bad at the start?
You are handed a losing franchise on purpose. It has cap room and a high draft pick, and the first two or three seasons are about using them well. Draft a quarterback, keep fan support up, and spend on the training facility before the stadium.
Can I play Retro Bowl on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The game was designed for touch. Drag to throw, tap to run and swipe to kick. Turn the phone sideways for the widest view, and use the fullscreen button under the player.
What is Retro Bowl College?
A 2024 spin-off from the same studio built around a college program: recruiting replaces the draft and players leave when their eligibility ends. It is on this site too, on its own page.
